What counts as a dental emergency

Severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, swelling, or bleeding that will not stop. When in doubt, call. We would rather hear from you early.

What to do right now

  • Knocked-out tooth: keep it moist (in milk or against your cheek), do not scrub it, and call us now.
  • Broken tooth: rinse with warm water, use a cold compress for swelling, call us.
  • Bad toothache: rinse, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and call. Avoid putting aspirin on the gum.
  • Swelling or fever: this can be serious. Call us, and if you cannot breathe or swallow, go to the ER.
