
Does Purple Toothpaste Actually Whiten Your Teeth?

No. Purple toothpaste tints your teeth, it doesn't whiten them. The violet pigment sits on the surface and cancels out yellow the way purple shampoo cancels brass in blonde hair, and it washes off.
That doesn't make it a scam. It makes it makeup for your teeth, and makeup is fine once you know that's what you bought.
I've practised in Bloor West Village for about 25 years, and this question now comes up at nearly every cleaning. Someone tried the purple tube and can't tell whether anything happened.
So here's what the research shows, including the trial the brand ran on its own product.
What is the purple pigment doing?
Colour correcting. Violet sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so a violet film over a yellow tooth makes the yellow read as less yellow to your eye.
That colour theory is the mechanism itself, not a metaphor for one. A 2025 systematic review describes these products as using "high-chroma violet dyes that exhibit a narrow absorbance peak at ~420 nm and hence optically cancel the broad yellow reflectance of dentine" (systematic review via PubMed Central). Dentin is the softer, more yellow layer sitting under your enamel, and it gives most adult teeth their base colour.
Read that mechanism again and notice what's missing from it. Nothing there breaks down a stain, and nothing lightens the tooth itself.
How long does the effect last?
About an hour, going by the strongest clinical evidence that exists.
The randomized controlled study of the V34 colour corrector serum enrolled 60 people. The product went on with a cotton bud for 30 seconds, got rinsed off, and tooth shade was measured at baseline, immediately after, at 30 minutes and at 60 minutes (randomized controlled study via PubMed).
The effect was real. One application produced an immediate three shade improvement on the shade guide, a 26.2% change, while the placebo without the dyes did nothing at all (p = 0.326) (randomized controlled study via PubMed).
Then the measuring stopped. The study's own title calls the change temporary, and the authors conclude that a colour corrector "can achieve worthwhile changes to tooth shade for up to 60 min" (randomized controlled study via PubMed).
Sixty minutes. Not sixty days.
Who ran that study?
The company that sells the product. Two of the authors are employees of Hismile and a third is a consultant to the company, all of it disclosed in the paper's conflict of interest statement (randomized controlled study via PubMed).
I'm not calling that dishonest. Company-funded research is ordinary, the disclosure sits right there in the open, and a placebo-controlled design with a blinded examiner is a fair way to test a cosmetic.
It does mean the evidence base is thin. When the 2025 systematic review went looking for every study on peroxide-free colour correctors, it found six, and two of the six came from the same company-affiliated author, including the only clinical study in the set (systematic review via PubMed Central).
The hour is in the paper. It isn't in the marketing.
What happens when independent researchers test it?
Less happens. An in vitro study published in the Journal of Dentistry in 2026 stained enamel samples with coffee, black tea or artificial saliva, then treated them with two colour corrector serums after brushing and compared them against 15% carbamide peroxide (in vitro study via PubMed).
Their finding, in their words: "No significant colorimetric differences were detected between the serum protocols and untreated controls, regardless of staining condition or evaluation time" (in vitro study via PubMed).
The peroxide behaved differently. It produced significantly greater whiteness than either serum, and it was the only treatment whose whiteness kept increasing over time (in vitro study via PubMed).
The two studies don't contradict each other. That lab measured colour immediately, at 24 hours and at 7 days (in vitro study via PubMed), and if the tint is gone by then, there's nothing left to find.
Is there any real colour change at all?
A small one, and I'd rather hand you the number than a verdict.
Across the six studies it reviewed, colour correctors produced a mean colour change of 2.8 to 3.5 on the ΔE00 scale, which clears the 2.7 threshold where a change becomes perceptible but falls short of the 3.3 benchmark for clinical acceptability. Carbamide peroxide reached up to 8.9 in the same comparison (systematic review via PubMed Central).
The reviewers' own summary is the fairest sentence anyone has written about these products: "Within the limitations of six small, mostly laboratory studies, moderate-certainty, short-term evidence suggests that HPFCCs achieve a perceptible ΔE00 (~3) while preserving enamel hardness; definitive claims of long-term safety and efficacy await larger RCTs" (systematic review via PubMed Central).
Notice what got tested in all of that. The studies used paint-on serums and gels, and the review points out that concentrated gels achieve greater pigment deposition than rinse-based products, which have lower adhesion and colour stability (systematic review via PubMed Central). A pigment you brush on and spit out in two minutes sits closer to the rinse end of that range than the gel end, which is my read, not the review's finding.
What whitens teeth, then?
Peroxide, and Health Canada puts it plainly: "Tooth whitening products generally use peroxide or peroxide-generating compounds as the whitening ingredient," and "In general, the more peroxide, the greater the whitening power" (Health Canada).
Peroxide doesn't sit on the tooth. It gets into the tooth structure and breaks apart the coloured molecules that make it look dark, which is why the change survives a rinse.
The Canadian Dental Association draws the same line between a surface effect and a chemical one. Its position statement defines whitening as "a cosmetic process" that can be claimed by any product removing debris or staining "through mechanical means," calls the effects of those products "relatively minor," and saves the word bleaching for "a more significant chemical effect that cannot be immediately reversed" (Canadian Dental Association).
A violet dye isn't even doing the mechanical version. It adds colour rather than removing any.
One lab study makes the gap concrete. Working with 60 human teeth stained in coffee, researchers found hydrogen peroxide "was the only whitening agent capable of not only removing artificial stains, but further whitening the natural enamel color," and that "the maximum effect achieved by all OTC whitening agents used in this study was the removal of artificially produced stains" (study via PubMed Central).
How long does real whitening hold?
Longer than an hour, and it still fades. Health Canada says home kit results "are not permanent, but may last up to six months" (Health Canada), while the CDA says supervised bleaching "can be expected to last up to 2 years, depending on lifestyle choices such as smoking and consumption of staining foods and beverages" (Canadian Dental Association).
Both sources flag the same limit. Whitening changes natural teeth only, "not caps, crowns, veneers, fillings or dentures" (Health Canada), and crowns and fillings "are unaffected by bleaching compounds and may appear darker relative to teeth that have been whitened by bleaching" (Canadian Dental Association).

Is purple toothpaste bad for your teeth?
Have no fear on the safety side. Across the studies in that review, sensitivity turned up in fewer than 3% of subjects and no significant enamel erosion was found (systematic review via PubMed Central).
The risk I'd raise isn't an ingredient. It's a swap.
If a purple tube replaces your fluoride toothpaste, you've traded decay protection for an optical trick. A 2025 lab study compared fluoride-free toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste and a colour correcting gel on demineralized human enamel, and concluded that "fluoride-containing toothpaste preserved enamel morphology and chemistry more effectively than the other formulations" (in vitro study via PubMed).
That study used three teeth per group, so I wouldn't lean on its finer details. The direction fits everything else we know about fluoride, and our post on hydroxyapatite versus fluoride toothpaste works through the same question with a different ingredient.
Use a colour corrector on top of a fluoride toothpaste if you enjoy it. Not instead of one.
So should you buy it?
Buy it if the hour is what you want. Before photos, before a wedding, before a first date, a dye that makes your teeth read a few shades brighter for 60 minutes (randomized controlled study via PubMed) is doing the job makeup does, and nothing in the safety data says don't.
Skip it if you're hoping it fixes the reason your teeth look yellow. Enamel thins over the years and the darker layer underneath shows through more, and no surface pigment reaches that. Our post on why teeth turn yellow covers what's behind the colour.
Try this: take a photo in daylight, use the product, then take the same photo an hour later and again the next morning. That test tells you more than any review will.
Some days the schedule pushes me, and I'll still spend the last few minutes of a cleaning on this question. People buy the purple tube hoping it fixes something a dye can't reach, and the question deserves five honest minutes.

Q: Will it work on my crowns or veneers? No, and neither will bleaching. Whitening products change natural teeth only, "not caps, crowns, veneers, fillings or dentures" (Health Canada). A violet dye can deposit on a restoration's surface, so a front crown may end up looking slightly different from the teeth beside it.
Q: Can my teenager use it? The peroxide-free colour correctors were reviewed specifically in adolescents and young adults, and the review supports them as "moderate but safe alternatives for young patients" (systematic review via PubMed Central). Bleaching is a different matter, and the CDA states bleaching products "should not be used for children under 12 years of age" (Canadian Dental Association).
Q: My teeth are yellow even though I brush twice a day. What gives? Usually it isn't stain at all. Enamel thins over the years and the yellower layer beneath shows through, and that colour comes from inside the tooth where no toothpaste reaches.
